How Did J&D Come To Be?

Founder and owner Jim Dusenberry started J&D Truck Repair in 1981 as a one-bay shop, with Jim working by himself doing truck repair and mobile truck service. A helper was soon added and together they performed fleet repair and service. The two also ended up doing engine transmission and rear-end work but prided themselves on being a total truck and trailer repair shop. Within a year, they needed more space and moved to a larger shop. At that time, J&D became a Cummins-authorized shop.

In 1984, because we were doing more and more fleet maintenance, a second location was added in Helena and one in Billings and later a fourth location at the local truck stop in Helena for truck quick lube, tires, and bulk oil distribution. The fleet maintenance services continued to grow and demand more space.

In 1986, the current location was purchased and all the Helena locations were merged except for the truck stop. It was around this time that the fuel distribution and C-store operation at the truck stop were added. J&D was now a Conoco fuel station and distributor for several brands of oil. After a few years, the fleet operation in Billings was closed to focus on the efforts in Helena.

After about six years, the truck stop was sold and the new owners took the fuel and C-store and the Bradnberry oil sector was moved to the current location. (Bradnberry is now under new ownership at a different location.) The primary focus of J&D Truck remains fleet service and truck repair, and, with twelve full-time mechanics, our goal is to do the job right and get you in and back out as fast as possible.

J&D also provides an Axle Surgeon station with a mobile service truck for on-location repairs. If you break an axle or spin a bearing, J&D can come to your location and repair the axle or replace a bearing right there on the vehicle. J&D has since added a Hunter Alignment system for truck and pickups and specializes in motor homes and camper and pull trailers.

In 1998, J&D Towing was added to our portfolio of services. We offer 24-hour emergency towing and service. Currently, two small boom wreckers, two rollbacks, two heavy tow trucks, two mobile service trucks, and a 53-foot sliding-axle trailer for motor homes and equipment are in operation.

J&D is AAA-approved. J&D Truck Repair is an authorized Cummins repair shop with two certified mechanics on staff for repairs.

To complement the towing, we began renting trailers and containers. J&D Trailer Rentals has many 40- and 20-foot containers along with three reefers and several dry trailers. We offer pick-up and delivery. This service is great for new home storage. We bring a trailer to your house, you load it up, and we deliver it to the desired location of your new house construction. And when you’re ready to move in, you can unload and we will come pick up the trailer. Packing blankets and ramps are available.

Jim has always placed an emphasis on worker safety whether in the shop or out on the job. He values the importance of education, believing that workers need to know what they are doing to stay safe and get the job done right. He is a certified TIM trainer for the state of Montana and served as president of the Montana Tow Truck Association for 14 years.
